Planning a Small Ready-Stock Handbag Assortment for a Boutique

Build a focused small handbag assortment by customer use, style and colour while keeping stock availability and landed costs visible.

A small first assortment can help a boutique learn which styles its customers respond to without starting a custom development project. The aim is not to choose the largest number of bags. It is to make a selection whose purpose, cost and availability can be understood.

  1. 1. Assign a role to each style
  2. 2. Limit untested variations
  3. 3. Keep a line-by-line buying sheet
  4. 4. Consider cost beyond the bag

Assign a role to each style

Describe the customer need each bag serves: everyday essentials, compact outings or a larger carry option. Avoid selecting several near-identical styles only because the thumbnails look attractive. Compare dimensions, carrying method and closure. A simple assortment record should explain why each SKU is included and which customer question it answers.

Limit untested variations

Separate style decisions from colour decisions. Starting with fewer variations can make it easier to understand customer responses, but there is no universal ideal mix. Base the choice on your own customers and selling space. Ask whether the preferred colours are currently available and whether another colour would genuinely serve the same role.

Keep a line-by-line buying sheet

For each line, record SKU, colour, requested pieces and any essential specification. As an illustrative planning example, three styles with two pieces each is six bags, not six styles. Such an example does not state SHIREBAG availability or pricing. Ask the team to confirm every selected line and flag substitutions before quoting a final total.

Consider cost beyond the bag

Request packing details and shipping to the actual destination before deciding whether the assortment fits your budget. Small orders can have transport costs that matter significantly per piece. Use the confirmed total rather than assuming the lowest unit-price item creates the best assortment. Any destination charges should be clarified as part of the quote.

Plan what you will learn

Record customer enquiries and sales against the SKU and colour so you can distinguish preference from simple display exposure. Existing stock may not be replenishable, so a successful first selection does not guarantee a repeat supply. Stock bags are finished products without OEM/ODM changes; discuss a separate development project if continuity and your own branding are essential.
